Andante Smart-Step System
Car accidents, falls, cerebral vascular accidents (CVA or strokes), sports injuries and total joint replacement
surgeries affect millions of individuals annually. Many of these accidents and surgeries involve the lower limbs
and often require physical therapy.
While the patient's well-being and care is of the utmost importance, today's health care climate also focuses
on costs. As health care providers and insurers work to reduce health care costs, length of hospital stay and
time in rehabilitation centers is being reduced significantly. The result is often a patient who is discharged
sicker or, in need of further rehabilitation therapy.
The patent pending Andante Smart Step System offers a new solution to the problems long associated with weight
bearing on injured lower limbs. The self-learning adaptive weight bearing monitor is designed for use by patients
in rehabilitation for lower extremity injuries as well as hip and knee replacements, and will allow health care
providers to reduce costs while increasing patient compliance in the rehabilitation process essential for recovery.
Using artificial intelligence to teach the patient to load the optimal weight during the rehabilitation period,
the Andante portable 3S system also uses sensory/tactile stimulation to provide biofeedback and feed forward.
Using feed forward and biofeedback system, the 3S measures the pressure applied to the leg, decides on the correct
pace, and stimulates the patient to "load" the optimal weight.
The Andante Smart-Step System:
-
Provides the physician with the ability to prescribe a weight bearing program personalized to the patient,
based on individual characteristics including age, weight, gender and fracture type;
-
Improves bone and tissue healing through the application of intermittent, adequate but not excessive
weight at the site of injury;
-
Reduces the chance of delayed bone union and implant failure;
-
Can easily be used at home, increasing patient compliance and satisfaction and reducing inpatient rehabilitation
thus reducing overall rehabilitation costs;
-
Improves clinician control and patient compliance documentation.
Indications:
-
Hip and knee replacements;
-
Lower limb fractures including fractures of the pelvis and femur and tibial plateau, tibia and fibula,
and stress fractures of the foot;
-
Strains and or sprains including those of the meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), and Achilles tendon;
-
Cerebral vascular accidents (CVAs also knows as strokes);
-
Lower limb amputations.
The device also has great potential for healthy individuals participating in a variety of sports activities,
including running and jogging and aerobic exercise. In sports training, the 3S can be used to optimize leg
strength and increase endurance and prevent overload by teaching proper weight loading during exercise.
